William S. (Bill) Culver, Jr.
2002 Biography
After graduating from Destrehan, I attended LSU Baton Rouge, graduating with a degree in Personnel Management. I worked for First Tennessee Bank in Memphis for two years, then returned to New Orleans, to First National Bank of Commerce, where I eventually became vice president of personnel. For the next twelve years, I handled campus recruiting, employment, counseling of employees, and designed wage, salary, and benefit systems.
In 1976, I began law school at night at Loyola, while working at the bank, graduating from law school in 1980. In 1981, I became an Assistant District Attorney in New Orleans, where I remained eight years, prosecuting everything from first degree murder cases to drug cases. I then became an Associate Attorney in a maritime law firm for seven years, then for four years was self-employed as a lawyer handling personal injury, medical malpractice, and small business clients. In 1998, I became as Assistant Attorney General for the State of Louisiana, where I am currently employed. I still maintain a small practice in addition to that.
I founded and was a part owner of Lido Gardens Italian Restaurant in Metairie for a couple of years, then sold out to my partner. I have been married three times, currently to Cheri, who is an administrator for one of the LSU out-patient clinics.
I have lived in Metairie for the past thirty years, and in my current house thirteen years. I am a member of Pete Fountain's Half-Fast Walking Club, and have paraded every Mardi Gras for the past twenty-eight years. I restore antique cars as a hobby, and currently have enough of them that it may be a disease. My email address is bigeasy3@msn.com.
1993 biography
After graduation I attended LSU, finally graduating in 1968 with a degree in Personnel Management. I accepted a position as Management Trainee with First National Bank in Memphis, Tennessee, and moved there in June 1968.
I married for the first time in December 1968 and returned to New Orleans in December 1969 to accept a position with First National Bank of Commerce as head of recruiting. I stayed with First NBC twelve years doing such things as campus recruiting, designing wage classification and salary programs, and counseling employees. I became involved in civic activities and helped organize the first program of Businesses Adopting Schools, served on the Chamber of Commerce committee that helped get the regional Vo-Tech schools built and was a Director of the Children’s Bureau, which is a United Way agency that places special-needs children for adoption. While at First NBC I was promoted to Assistant Vice President, and married a second time.
I enrolled in Loyola Law School at night in 1976, while working full-time at the bank.
In 1978, while working at the bank full-time and going to law school at night, I started Lido Gardens Restaurant on Airline Highway. I sold the restaurant to my partner after a year and it’s still in business.
In 1980 I graduated from law school and in 1981 became an Assistant D.A. in Orleans Parish. After a year, I was promoted to Division Chief, supervising fifty-five D.A. employees, and I specialized in murder and rape cases. I remained with the D.A.’s office for eight years and then went into private practice with my current law firm. I now do personal injury, criminal defense, maritime and admiralty and small business cases. In December 1992 I became licensed to practice law in Texas.
At age forty I hit mid-life crisis and went out and bought a sailboat, never having been on one in my life. It was a great learning experience, and I miss my boat terribly (I sold it when I bought a house in 1989).
Looking forward to seeing everyone!
